White Buffalo Baby Boy Born July 1st 2002

Dear Friends,

News has just come that a male White Buffalo has been born on Spirit Mountain Ranch, just north of Flagstaff, Arizona. The ranch, owned by Jim and Dena Riley, is already the home of three female White Buffalo, so this marks the fourth White one in the herd. For an older update on the Riley's click here. Below is a letter from A. S. Barry, who has been helper to the Rileys and their buffalo herd.

 Blessings to each and every one of you.
I was on vacation this week, out of town, and I heard the joyous news that we had a White Buffalo Baby Boy born on Monday July 1st at 10:35 am. This is Arizona's first ever white buffalo calf and we are so happy and proud that the Creator would bless us with such abundance. That day when he was born, outside of Flagstaff, they had there first rain in a long time and then the next day it poured in Sedona. Thank you Great Spirit. Please send more and more to our dry lands.
I would have written sooner but I just got back and wanted to send this out to all of our relatives so we could all celebrate this weekend over this miracle birth.

Congressman Proposes Peace Department!
Representative Dennis J. Kucinich has proposed that there be a Cabinet post for Peace. Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) believes that a new, broad-based
approach to peaceful, nonviolent conflict resolution at both domestic and international levels is needed.
The time has come to review age-old challenges with new thinking," Kucinich said. "I am introducing this conceptual framework with the hopes that a Department of Peace can eventually emerge holding peace as an organizing principle in government while coordinating service to every level of American society."
The Department of Peace would be responsible for a wide range of activities which involve promoting and facilitating peaceful, nonviolent conflict resolution. Domestically, the Department of Peace would be charged with developing policies which address issues such as domestic violence, spousal abuse, child abuse and mistreatment of the elderly. The Department would also have an international mandate by analyzing foreign policy and making recommendations to the President on matters pertaining to national security, including the protection of human rights and the prevention and de-escalation of unarmed and armed international conflict.

Barbara Marx Hubbard, when she ran for Vice President, had as an agenda that the Vice President's office be that of peace, as the President's is that of war. She continues to work on the idea of a national peace room, through which peaceful and sustainable activities could be supported and coordinated nation wide. She is co-Founder/President of the Foundation for Conscious Evolution.

Stop The Attack on Iraq!

As we prepare to honor the victims of September 11, our government prepares for a war on Iraq that will make us less safe, not more. The Bush administration and Congress are anticipating an attack on Iraq, even though Iraq has not attacked us, and we have no evidence that the Iraqi government plans do so. American intelligence agencies have confirmed that there is no evidence that Iraq or Saddam Hussein were involved in the Sept. 11 attacks on the US.

On the days preceding the anniversary of the horrific September 11 attacks, we must put forward a call to Congress: no more innocent victims - whether they be American, Afghan, Iraqi or any nationality.

A US war on Iraq will:

• Take the lives of US soldiers and many innocent Iraqi civilians
• Increase anti-American sentiment abroad
• De-stabilize the Middle East
• Undermine international cooperation
• Defy international law including the United Nations (UN) charter

Instead, the US should pursue real solutions that will make us safer:

• Open new doors for diplomatic alternatives to the current impasse.
• Lift economic sanctions that target Iraqi civilians.
• Negotiate, through the UN, a return of weapons inspectors to the country.
• Support democracy and human rights throughout the Middle East.
• Strengthen international agreements to reduce weapons of mass destruction.
  

The White House is planning to launch a war against Iraq. Yet there has been no real public or congressional debate about why an invasion is justified, no convincing explanation of why a war is needed. The international community is virtually unanimous in its opposition to an attack on Iraq, leaving the United States without allies. A full-scale war against Iraq would isolate the US from the rest of the world, undermine the effort against terrorism, and senselessly kill tens of thousands of civilians. The Bush Administration is determined to initiate an illegal and ill-considered invasion. We the people must be just as determined to stop a war that threatens to tear the world apart.

There are ten good reasons this must not happen:

• There Is No Justification for Going to War.
• What was Iraq's act of aggression against us that justifies war? There has been no attack on the US, no Iraqi threat of war, no Iraqi connection to September 11. War should be a last recourse of self-defense, a step to be taken only when all other alternatives have been exhausted. What the Bush Administration is planning is an act of aggression, not an act of self-defense. The international coalition that fought the first Gulf War was cemented by the principle that one country cannot invade another without provocation. Now the White House is poised to dismiss the coalition to launch an unprovoked invasion of Iraq. This would violate the US's historic policy against using force preemptively. We should not go to war against a distant country that has not attacked us.
• Iraq Does Not Pose a Clear and Present Danger.
• The White House says we should invade Iraq to prevent Saddam Hussein from using weapons of mass destruction. But there is no evidence that Iraq is still developing nuclear, chemical or biological weapons. During the 1990s, United Nations weapons inspectors dismantled all of Iraq's major weapons factories and destroyed nearly all of Iraq's weapons and long-range missiles. In terms of conventional arms, Iraq's military is now at one-third of its pre-Gulf War strength. According to Ex-Marine and former UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter, Iraq presents absolutely nothing of a military threat. And given Hussein's natural desire for self-preservation, it is highly unlikely he would launch any attack that would result in his destruction. Since deterrence is working, why should the US start a bloody war that would undoubtedly lead to massive human suffering?
• A Presidential War Would Violate the US Constitution.
• In order to protect against reckless and ill-considered wars, the framers of the US Constitution gave war-making powers to the Congress, not the President. Only Congress the branch of government closest to the people can declare war and appropriate tax funds to pay for a war. But the Bush Administration is already deep into war planning without having even consulted Congress. Any military move against Iraq should be put to a vote of Congress.
• An Invasion of Iraq Would Violate International Law
• An attack on Iraq would constitute an attack on the Charter of the United Nations, which says that armed force may only be used in self-defense, or with the approval of the UN Security Council. That is what happened during the first Gulf War. This time around, the US has refused to bring the matter before the UN because there are no legal grounds that will convince the Security Council that force must be used to make Iraq comply with UN resolutions. An unauthorized attack on Iraq would make the US an international outlaw.
• When It Comes to Invading Iraq, the US Has Zero Allies.
• All the countries of the Middle East including Kuwait are opposed to a war with Iraq. Our allies in Europe think an invasion is foolhardy. Only Great Britain's Tony Blair has offered tepid support for a US attack on Iraq, and his approval is tempered by widespread opposition from the British public and his own Labour Party. An invasion of Iraq would isolate the US from the rest of the world and shatter the principles of international cooperation and mutual defense that are key to US and global security.
• An Attack on Iraq Would Make Us Less Safe.
• An isolated US is an unsafe country. An unprovoked attack will ignite anti American sentiment around the world, disrupting efforts to weaken terrorist networks. Any attack would also further destabilize a Middle East already inflamed by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While the benefits of invading Iraq are murky, the costs are all-too-clear.
• Invading Iraq Would Be Difficult, Costly and Without a Clear Victory.
• An invasion of Iraq will be not nearly as easy as kicking the Taliban out of Kabul. Although Hussein's army has been weakened, Iraq's forces remain large enough to put up a formidable defense. And it is likely that Iraqi forces will be far more determined to defend Baghdad than they were to defend Kuwait City, dragging US forces into a bloody fight in heavily populated areas. It is estimated that any full-scale invasion will cost at least $80 billion dollars. During the first Gulf War, allies like Japan covered 80 percent of the cost. It's doubtful that will happen again, leaving the US taxpayers already facing renewed budget deficits to pick up the costs. And even if the US does overthrow Hussein, what next? As the experience in Afghanistan shows, throwing out a government is easier than putting a new one together. An invasion without allies would leave the US to enforce a peace in a chaotic country fractured by ethnic conflicts.
• A War Would Kill Thousands of People.
• An assault on Baghdad would result in far more American casualties than the war in Afghanistan. And the toll on Iraqis would be far higher. Preliminary Pentagon estimates say that an invasion of Iraq could lead to the deaths of 10,000 innocent civilians or approximately ten times the number of people killed during the US bombing of Afghanistan.

Other Options Besides War Are Available

The best way to stop Iraq from resuming its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction is to restart the UN inspections, which were largely successful. The UN is currently trying to resume inspections, but the Bush Administration is dismissing the effort out of hand. This is foolish. The US should work with the UN to get the inspection program back on track.
Opposition to the War Is Growing

Americans know deep down that this impending war makes no sense. According to recent polls, one-third of Americans are against a war with Iraq, and a strong majority thinks Congress should approve any invasion. Our task is to turn the publics latent misgivings into blatant opposition. If the citizens say loud and clear that we don't want a war against Iraq, it will be more difficult for the president to go through with his scheme. We have to educate our fellow citizens about why war with Iraq is wrong, and then hold our elected representatives accountable to the will of the people.

Gus, the Albino Bull born August 2, 2002.

On August 2, 2002 Tim and Kathy Gintner saw what they believed was a miracle on their farm near Pittsburg, Kansas. The miracle they witnessed was the birth of an albino calf. A true albino calf, white as the driven snow with little pink eyes, ears, mouth and white hoofs. "He looks more like a white Easter Bunny than a bull", says Kathy Gintner, Tim's wife. Albino rabbits and mice are common, but albino bulls aren't.

Gus is the product of a Black Angus Bull father and a combination of red limousine and an Angus mother. The calf is healthy and doing great under the watchful eye of their local veterinarian, Dr. Moreland.

Tim Gintner agrees that the little white calf is special. "I think he's here for a journey, God gave him to us for a reason." They have tentative plans to someday breed Gus with White Cloud, a white buffalo heifer in North Dakota, to create the only albino beefalo in the world.

Eventually, Tim Gintner said he would like to sell or lease the albino white calf to a zoo or somewhere where Gus would have all the veterinary care he needs. Where anyone that wanted to, could some see him. They are just unheard of, Tim Gintner said, explaining that albinos are so rare because cattle are production animals. So many are slaughtered for food. It's rare for the genetic mutation causing albinism to be left in existence.

He added, "We want to share what we think is a miracle, with the rest of the world, but most of all, we just want what is best for Gus.

Help Needed For Relocation of White Buffalo
9/2001

Dear Friends,

At the end of December, 2001, Jim and Dena Riley of South Dakota will be relocating their family and their buffalo herd to a ranch near Flagstaff, Arizona. The herd includes three white buffaloes: Miracle Moon and her daughter Rainbow Spirit (both pictured on page 122 of my book, Legend of the Rainbow Warriors) and Peace Pilgram.

The family needs help to make the move. Jim is in poor health, resources are scarce, and the whole enterprise of moving a ranch is an enormous undertaking.

The Rileys and their herd will be moving to a remote Arizona ranch without electricity. To make the transition possible and reasonably smooth, they need people to come forward in various ways right now. Below is a list of some of the supplies they could use

and of course financial donations (which can be routed through the non-profit charity listed below, will be tax deductible.) I have been in direct touch with the Riley's and the non-profit organization that is helping, and so can confirm the legitimacy of this request, and the need.

If you can help at all -- even if just by passing this along to other people who might be interested and able to help -- please do so swiftly. Time is short.

List of the things needed for the relocation of the White Buffaloes and herd.:

• Hay to be there when we arrive with the buffalo.
• Water in the tanks for the buffalo (2 holding tanks on the property).
• Fencing for 5 acres (slat fencing) for the buffalo
• (1) 10-15 kw generator to run the business and home (it's 6 miles to power).
• (2-3) 60 ft flat bed trucks to haul the buffalo handling system, panels and stuff
• (2) 26 ft enclosed hauling trucks to haul our furniture and personal items.
• (2) 2 or 1 ton trucks to pull (2) trailers which we have converted into
  a tour wagon loaded with tools etc.
• Money for the trip and fuel for the convoy to Flagstaff.
• We may need some to help drive or pack trucks and be a part of the convoy to Flagstaff.

Millennium Award
Brooke was honored to receive a Millennium Award given by Magical Blend Magazine for her work in renewing ritual and unifying cultures. White Buffalo News
Miracle, the white buffalo calf born several years ago and revered by many, has now had her own calf, Millennium! Miracle has changed color several times, showing the four colors of the sacred quadrants, and her calf is a normal colored calf.

There have also been other white buffalo calves born to help remind us of White Buffalo Woman's teachings: respect, unity and caring for all. One was born on the Pine Ridge Lakota reservation in South Dakota several years ago, and I have also heard of one in Canada.

** I just heard that the white buffalo on the Lakota reservation was killed by a tribal member. The tribal member, who happened to be driving by, was hailed by a Pine Ridge police officer, who after chasing the bull to no avail, directed the tribal member to shoot the animal. It was shocking to hear this and sad that a tribal member was pulled into the situation. One wonders if such a base deed has something to do with the unrest and conflict erupting again on the reservation. The native people there are trying, once again, to get a tribal government which cares for their interests. I heard that grandmothers and children are occupying the tribal offices! Whatever the reason for the killing, it's important that we pray for everyone concerned.

**This is a corrected story. We had inadvertently written that the police had shot the buffalo.

Practicing Inclusion and Unity
There are people in many places around the world declaring war on each other for all sorts of bizarre reasons. A few angry Lakota's are at it again, with another of their declarations of war on anyone "stealing their religion." Other groups like the "Center for Spirit" in Sonoma continue their hateful energy. Some of these people are into defrauding the public by writing strange things and then signing my name on e-mail and chat rooms! They are going on and on about whether or not I belong to a tribe, so I have put an enrollment document in Meet Brooke .

There are a couple comments I will make, and then refer you to some other fine responses to this kind of negative energy:

1. Since All energy is being magnified and returned to us at this time, even more than usual, I feel sorry for those who continue the outmoded and destructive energies of hate and division. They bring such terrible energy to themselves and the world.
2. They presume to be the arbiters of what all the rest of us are doing, even when they have little or no personal experience of it. And it seems that almost everything spiritual gets included with what they "own". As human family, we have the right to our basic spirituality, to our Earth wisdom practices, to drum and purify and chant and dance. Those and many other things belong to each and every one of us. So presuming to own them, is not only foolish but extremely arrogant
3. Behind the scenes are many native people who are peaceful, loving, sharing human beings who are as distressed by the mean and divisive energy as all of us are. Don't judge all native people by the hate mongers who scream the loudest.
4. The primary lesson is to not exclude them from our hearts: that would be buying into the same negative game they are playing. I sense that most of them have a good intention of some kind, just negative ways of doing it. My practice is to send special love to these people and to meditate on all of us being included in the circle of Creator's Love.

TAKING INDIAN LAND..AGAIN!
Writing before the crisis in Kosovo, Dr. Thayer Scudder, professor of Anthropology at the California Institute of Technology, who has studied resettlement issues in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East for the UN stated:

"The forced relocation of over 12,000 Native Americans is one of the worst cases of involuntary community resettlement that I have studied throughout the world over the past 40 years. Such a situation would never have arisen in the US if the people involved had been Anglo-Americans. That alone illustrates the extent to which the human rights of one of the poorest minority groups in the US have been violated."

The tribal governments set up by the BIA were created in order to give the US a legal negotiating partner to procure mineral rights from the reservation. These tribal governments have never represented the people. The tribal governments funding is supplied by Peabody Coal, the company which now awaits the Rhode Island sized chunk of land which is about to be carved out of the reservation so it can be strip mined for coal. When traditional Hopi leaders sought to stop the lawyers from leasing coal in violation of the Hopi religion, US courts dismissed the case, ruling that it had no authority over the actions of these tribal governments. The Indians have no representative voice before the courts, and are not allowed to vote, giving them no voice in Congress. Still they resist, refusing to move off the land, although they are now denied building materials, livestock, and any means of sustenance.

In this instance, the mission is decidedly to acquire territory and to dominate others. A people are being singled out for repression, for expulsion, and for destruction because of their religious and ethnic heritage. Is this our 'noble mission' and the world we seek to create?
