In the end we will turn attention from any "problems" and challenges toward a positive, heartful vision of what is possible for you and worthy of you -- how you wish to spend the energy of this one precious life. We will step out of the cage of "good and bad" into the garden of that which is useful, beneficial, appropriate, timely and of service to yourself and the world.

This process at its deepest and broadest is the re-spiritualizing of America, from the heart outward.
I know that many of you have had profound questions about the practice of Earth Wisdom spirituality, brought forward because you want to honor the sacred ways of primary peoples. These 8 lessons will address those concerns, and help provide you a base upon which to stand in those ways that belong to all people. It will help you differentiate between those things which belong to others, in which you should participate by invitation and training only, and those things which are generic to our human family and the ways of Spirit which rise up through the consciousness of all.
The fact that some native peoples are withdrawing their ceremonies from outsiders is a strong impetus to get deeper and find your own unique way to carry the traditions forward, rather than having you drop them in this critical time on Earth. For those who have not yet found an Earth Wisdom practice, there will be wonderful lessons to help you begin. It is your birthright.
I've had a very clear call to offer a course which can help you in this positive and deepening process, no matter what your personal decisions about your own practices and spiritual tools. It excites me to think of working with you because we are walking such a beautiful and powerful path right now. Spirit is calling us to another, more profound level of our personal spirituality and our connection with the Source of all Things -- the source of all life and all ritual forms.
In creating this, I will be asking for input and support from many other wise people. Thank you to every one of you who step in behind me to share from your hearts. Our intention is to cover as many aspects of this process as we can; and, I know that from your responses during the course, we will learn what other questions and concerns need to be addressed.

1. Moving Forward with Power & Clarity: Discerning the essence of Earth Wisdom practice. Releasing the Old & forgiving the past. Graceful and sure ways to move beyond the past and into present time, with heart set toward the future.
2. Going to the Heart: Getting to the heart of the matter where true magic and power resides. Coming from Love. Manifesting your dreams.
3. Purification Lodge: Discernment of ceremonies. Purifying ourselves through Earth wisdom rituals. Re-membering our own ancestors' ways.
4. The Pipe of Oneness: The essential power of Oneness. To carry the C'anupa or release it. The balance of feminine and masculine in ritual objects such as the pipe. Creating your own vessel for the containment of All Things--to send up smoke in honor and respect for All Our Relations. The arrow/staff of the masculine. Listening to Creator speak through your own heart --make this ritual your own. White buffalo calves.
5. Vision Quest -- A Human Sacred Form: Lessons in going to a place of quiet without and without to listen to the voice of Spirit and your highest Self. Moon-time practices for women. Taking the high road!
6. Ritual and Ceremony: Ceremony as meaningful and magical form. Your own practice. Sacred bundles. Basic principles.
7. Seasons and Passages: Coming of age rites -what you may have missed and can still receive. Working with the young people in your life and community - menstruation and manhood. 8 Seasonal ceremonies for your family and community. Eldering.
8. Dedication Dance -- Renewal and Wholeness: Creating a gathering to pray for and support what is needed in your circle, community, and/or world.

Lakota Loss: TO TRANSFORM AND DEEPEN Brooke Medicine Eagle

Recently, Arvol Looking Horse and a group from the Lakota and other native nations put out a decree that allows only tribal peoples to participate in their sacred ceremonies. http://www.homestead.com/arvollookinghorse/Other_Stmts_Chief_Arvol_Mar2003.html . Untold numbers of you have been participating deeply in those forms of spirituality, and will feel the loss sorely. I speak to you today in connection with continuing your deepening spirituality -- fulfilling your wish to ripen that spirituality into full blossom and make a positive difference with that on this sweet Earth at this time, especially in the face of current challenges. The Earth belongs to us all; we are keepers of her, and our ceremonies are part of that keeping and spiritual stewardship.
To begin with, I must say that I support the right of any group to hold its own ceremonies -- those that have been given and those that have been created. You who know me realize that I have always made this clear -- only those who have been invited and given very clear permission, can participate in or eventually conduct specific ceremonies from a spirituality not of your birth and initiation. For example, a "Lakota west-facing healing lodge" belongs to the elders and keepers of that particular purification lodge, who have the right to make decisions about who participates in what way. As sad as it is for many and as much as there may be disagreement about the decree that has been put out, it can in fact be a positive thing, which will result in the clean up, as stated in the document, of abuses on both sides of the fence -- including the selling of Sun Dance and other sacred ceremonies to non-native people. Unfortunately, it also affects those who have loving and honorably carried some of these ways. I personally believe that White Buffalo Calf Woman gave the sacred C'anupa for all to pray in a holy way. The grandmothers have asked the Rainbows to continue in a good and sacred way, and the teachings can live and be expressed through our hearts.
You also know that my global research shows that many rituals and forms of Earth spirituality are generic to the whole human family, only clothed in the customs, traditions, and experience of that particular people. For instance, it made me very happy when I learned that people from my Scots bloodlines hold a purification lodge -- a small enclosure on the Earth, darkened, a womb for cleansing and praying, a place of renewal and rebirthing, heated intensely by glowing stone people. And now I hear of stone people lodges of all kinds all around the world. For all of our ancestors, from whatever continent, it made deep, common sense to put these elements of Earth, Fire, Water, & Air together for ritual (as well as general) cleansing. I love "sweat lodges" made of willow and hide (or willow and canvas as is usual today) set beside a flowing mountain stream, yet I know of other, non-nomadic peoples around the world who build permanent purification lodges (structures) of wood. In every culture, these are places of prayer, of ceremony, of spirit. Looking at another aspect of this, we honor the Sacred pipe is a representation of the prayerful joining of the male/female energies of all things in unity and holiness. There are many forms through which this powerful ceremony can be practiced that involve sacred marriage baskets, medicine bowls, arrow bundles and other powerful symbols. The profound nature of the practice is not limited to one form.
I tell you these things so that you can differentiate between a particular form of spirituality and the deep spirit emerging through those forms into human experience. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT GIVE UP ALL OF OUR EARTH WISDOM RITUALS IN REACTION to this decree! Let go of the outer forms if they are no longer there to support you, and go within to the place from which they all emerge -- the one eternal Source of All Things. THE EARTH BELONGS TO AND LIVES IN EACH OF US, AND WE MUST DO OUR PART IN THE KEEPING OF THIS SACRED LIFE.
In this time when the world is on the fine edge of chaos, where greed and power are dancing their last horrific dance, WE MUST EACH HOLD STRONG TO OUR SPIRITUALITY AND CONTINUE TO DEEPEN OUR COMMUNION WITH ALL-THAT-IS. We must dance for peace and wholeness and the renewal of the world. If you can't dance for renewal through Sun Dance, then dance and pray in your own way. Or come join us at DANCE AWAKE THE DREAM in the ancient ceremonial valley of Blacktail this July. See Calendar Page. Whatever works to continue your prayers for the world……. Remember to use the imagination Creator gave you and the gestures you choose to make, as you walk that path to beauty and wholeness.
Although the withdrawing of certain forms may affect you deeply, do not let it shove you away from what is vitally important, to you and to the world -- your blossoming spirituality and dedication to All Our Relations. Take heart, knowing that Creator always gives gifts more beautiful and rich than we can imagine to ask for. We now have the opportunity to step away from dependence on ANY other religion, spirituality, or dogma -- to step into the sacred chambers of our own hearts and touch Creation directly. It is an interesting challenge and amazing opportunity. We are being asked for finer and finer discrimination -- discernment -- and will make a qualitative and quantitative leap as a result of those choices.

Your and my generation are moving toward the completion of a task begun long ago, which accelerated dramatically in the 1960-70s. We turned back to the Earth for our spiritual connection rather than to a well-housed religion. As we did this we began to understand the real significant of some of the dogmatic forms we had been given. I remember a friend of mine, a confirmed ex-Catholic. She said that by the time she left the church, she had almost grown to hate the rosary, and being made to say rote again and again, for everything from enlightenment to punishment, "Mother Mary, ………". She left the church and searched for her own spirituality, what her heart called her to. The Goddess became her way. And of course, this is where it gets wonderful humorous, to me and her and perhaps to you. As she deepened into the ways of the Goddess, she was thrown at the feet of the Great Mother. It didn't take too long for it to dawn on her that Mother Mary is one representation of same Mother. Now she happily holds Mary to her heart, and prays with her in the fullness of her understanding and devotion.
This deepening of our spiritual knowing will bring us to the archetypal symbols that have illuminated our lives from the beginning of time. We will become a mystical people-- enlightened and enlivened each day through our connection with Great Spirit in all manifest and ethereal forms. We will leave behind the surface dogma, and again honor the deep spirit of life, and All Our Relations who manifest through that Love.
Now is the time to begin. Get ready to take off an old garment, lay it aside with honor, and step into something fresh and custom-designed just for you. This is truly a joyful path and I am happy to walk it with you.
